Sanctity of Human Life

National Sanctity of Human Life Month

On January 22, 1973, the Roe v. Wade decision legalized abortion in the United States. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated January 22 as National Sanctity of Human Life Day, and since then many churches observe the month of January as Sanctity of Human Life Month.

Even though Roe has since been overturned, the month of January remains a meaningful time to reflect, to remember lives deeply valued, and to renew our commitment to serve those facing unplanned pregnancies.

Since 1982, Hope Rising has partnered with churches and individuals to walk alongside women and men in unplanned pregnancies. Through those partnerships, more than 15,600 women have chosen life for their unborn babies. We continue this work because every person matters—and we believe in coming alongside those in crisis with compassion and hope.

Here are some recent national figures that help shape our understanding of the landscape: – In 2024, approximately 1.14 million abortions were estimated in the U.S., representing the highest recent annual total. (Source: Society of Family Planning, December 2024) – That translates to an abortion rate of about 15.4 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15-44 in 2024. (Source: Guttmacher Institute, 2024) – According to research, most regular churchgoers hear a sermon on the sanctity of life less than once a year. This suggests there’s still significant opportunity for faith communities to engage this message in meaningful ways. Because the Bible speaks clearly about caring for the vulnerable, we feel compelled to respond—both in word and in action.

“..Before I was born the Lord called me; from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.” — Isaiah 49:1
